David Freeman is Chaplain to Thetford

Thetford Christians Together and Good Work are, in partnership, to facilitating David’s chaplaincy in Thetford.   David celebrated his fifth year as chaplain with an inspiring event that brought many people from different companies to a meeting which reviewed his work through a DVD made for the purpose and also offered a chance to share the Good News with those who attended.   David says: “The work in Thetford continues, offering continuity of support to those people, companies and organizations. I am privileged to visit. Chaplaincy is not an easy job, but it is rewarding and an opportunity to make lots of friends and foster deep and mutual caring for each other.”   There are a number of recurring themes of David’s pastoral care. Serious illness, family and relationship problems, and job insecurity are all subjects of day to day concern. The migrant population continues to grow and we are now preparing to produce leaflets in a number of languages to help us share information with the many contract workers we meet. David Freeman The chaplaincy of Thetford is broad and includes:   Visiting brothers who together own a very successful Thetford company called Cosy Carpets   Chatting to the “lads” at Thetford Fire Station who are always friendly and hospitable with offers of “a fire fighters sandwich” which seems to be made of half a French loaf, 2lbs of bacon, 1lb sausages and half a bottle of HP sauce! David says “I usually settle for a cup of tea”.   He calls regularly at Economos, a company which supply seals and gaskets to a whole range of industries in a variety of sizes, from half inch washers to others several feet in diameter. They have a specialist machine for producing seals for more unusual applications including one offs for a team rebuilding a World War II Messerschmitt 262 jet fighter.   David also visits voluntary and community organizations including Thetford Volunteer Bureau (TVB) who arrange for volunteers to help people in the community in all sorts of ways. At the new £4.5M Healthy Living Centre he has worked with others to set up “Listening Ear”. This is a new venture of Thetford Christians Together to facilitate a team of volunteers to be on hand for any one who just wants to talk and unburden themselves. This is a direct spin-off from the work of the chaplaincy.
